Thinly slice the kielbasa.
Slice the onions.
Sauté the onions and kielbasa in a little shortening until the onions are translucent and the kielbasa is lightly browned.
Drain the sauerkraut.
In a 2-quart casserole dish, layer half of the sauerkraut on the bottom.
Layer half of the sautéed kielbasa and onions over the sauerkraut.
Sprinkle half of the brown sugar over the kielbasa and onions.
Repeat the layers with the remaining sauerkraut, kielbasa and onions, and brown sugar.
Cover the casserole dish.
Bake in a 325 degree oven for 1 hour.
Remove from oven and let rest a few minutes before serving.
Serve hot with mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and homemade applesauce.
