Soak ham overnight in cold water to cover and scrub well.
Place ham in a roasting pan.
Add 5 cups of water to the pan and cover tightly with a lid or heavy foil.
Place in a cold oven.
Turn oven on and set at 500°F.
After temperature is reached, bake ham for 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat and do not open oven.
Let stand for 3 hours.
Heat oven to 500°F again and bake for 10 minutes.
Turn off heat and leave overnight (or about 10 to 12 hours) without opening oven door.
Next day, remove ham from roasting pan, remove skin, and trim fat to desired thickness.
Score the fat and place on a rack in a baking pan.
Glaze the ham as desired.
