Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Spread 1/2 c. brown sugar evenly over the melted margarine.

In a mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 c. shortening and 1 c. sugar.

Gradually add 2 c. self-rising flour and 1 c. milk, alternating between the two, until well combined.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let cool for 5 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
Remove wax paper and serve warm.
