Blend tomatoes, ginger, and green chilies into a paste.
Heat oil in a कढ़ाई (kadai/wok).
Add cumin seeds and let them crackle for 30 seconds.
Add tomato, ginger, and green chili paste and cook for 5 minutes.
Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt.
Cook for 5 minutes.
Add lentils and cook for 2 minutes.
Add 1-1/2 cups of water, mix, and cook for 20-30 minutes, until lentils are cooked.
Heat ghee in a tempering pan.
Add cumin and red chili powder and mix for 30 seconds.
Pour the tempering over the dal and mix.
Serve hot with roti or rice.
