Prepare broccoli by cutting into florets.
Start steaming the broccoli until tender-crisp.
Begin cooking the bow tie pasta according to package directions.
While pasta and broccoli are cooking, heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
Add diced onion and minced garlic to the pan, and sauté until translucent.
Add the sardines to the pan and break them up with a spoon.
Incorporate the green olives into the sardine mixture and let simmer for a few minutes.
Add the pine nuts to the pan and toast lightly.
Add approximately half a cup of the liquid from the steamed broccoli to the pan.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the sauce cook until the pasta is almost ready.
Right before draining the pasta, add the steamed broccoli to the frying pan with the onion and sardine mixture. Stir well to combine.
Drain the pasta and add it back to the pan with the sauce.
Mix the pasta and sauce thoroughly.
Serve immediately, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with parmesan cheese (optional).
