Rinse the basmati rice very well under running water until the water is almost clear.
Soak the rinsed rice in water for 30 minutes.
Strain the soaked rice.

Add the strained rice, 3 cups of water, remaining oil, and salt to the pot and stir gently.
Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low, cover tightly, and simmer for 10 minutes.
Reduce heat to very low and steam for 20 minutes to create a crispy bottom (Tahdig).
(Optional) If using cinnamon sticks, at step 7, open the lid and submerge the cinnamon sticks into the rice. Cover and steam for 20 minutes before serving.
